These viruses activate when you reboot your system and will infect any other floppies inserted afterwards. They have the potential to take up memory or freeze your system.

File Virus - This is a virus that infects other files on your system. Otherwise known as the ‘classic’ form of virus, it is also the most common and easiest to distribute. Some forms of file virus are able to hide themselves by changing aspects of their code with each infection.

Multipart Virus - This file infects both the boot sector and files. These types of viruses were fairly common when most computers operated on a DOS system but declined when integrated operating systems became the norm.

What can be done if you have a virus? To protect from getting or cleaning out an existing virus, an antivirus utility is needed.

While naming your files or blog posts titles:

First lets talk about optimal filenames:
Never use filenames like ch1, ch2, … or 1, 2, 3, etc…
If you want hierarchy go for ch1-Intro, ch2-Types, etc…
Try to use longer filenames with as much keyword as possible.
If file is static HTML file then always make use of title tag : also try to use title up to 100 characters.
Use underscore (_) instead of space to separate multi word filenames
e.g. use “luv_maloo” instead of “luv maloo”

Now its Blog Posts Titles:
Make sure all keywords comes earlier.
Try to minimize use of junk words like of, are, hurry, surprise, important, read-this, etc at least in first 30-40 characters.
Enable Post Pages which give each of your posts their own unique web page, in addition to appearing on your blog’s front page. (For Blogspot Blogger, Go to Settings >> Archiving >> Enable Post Pages and select “YES”)
Try to use maximum available length of blog post titles (normally up to 100 characters)

Reasoning:
First let me remind you what makes a URL (i.e. Uniform Resource Locater) with a simplest example.

URL = .protocol e.g. HTTP + site name + optional path + filename.

Also remember title of a page is displayed in your browsers top most strip (it is often concatenated with browser name itself, but don’t bother about this browser name part)

With these two terms we will dissect now blog post titles and filenames together.
Blog post title forms Title of post pages as well as URL.
If post pages are enabled, every blog post gets converted to static HTML page with a file name which makes is part of URL.
Post pages are nothing but files dynamically created so again convention for file names and post page title overlaps.
Thats why I insisted similar things like keeping file names and blog post titles longer as much as possible.
Unfortunately for files their name and title tag need to be chosen separately.
For blogs post tiles goes in both places. But only first 30-40 characters of post title gets converted to filename i.e. name of post page.
Thats why be wise to use maximum keyword as early as possible in post title.
Always remember never exceed title more than 100 (while 150 is allowed). Search engine may treat you spam if they discover titles are too lengthy.

How it benefits:

First lets look at an example : A user hits prevent copy paste of your articles
Point to be noted: Whenever a user hit a query highest weight is given to URL and blog post titles (of course within same pagerank group)

Thats why all this trouble for post titles and file names. It may appear tedious but soon you will be habitual with it.

Besides all these software and tools to write a blog post, I have recently learned that Word 2007 is also a powerful Blog Writing Tool. I have been using Windows Live Writer to mostly write Blog Posts till now, but I find Word 2007 to be even better in some cases. Word 2007 seems to give you a richer interface. For instance, with one click, you can insert any of the following into your blog post.
* Pictures
* Shapes
* SmartArt Graphics
* WordArt
* Symbols

Formatting your blog post is much more easier in Word 2007, than in Windows Live Writer. I also found that the speed of Live writer to be slower than Word 2007, both to start and work.
However, the availability of many useful plugins make Live Writer a useful piece of software to write blog post, which is missing in Word 2007. Yet another thing is that Live Writer supports Technorati Tagging while it does not seem to be possible for Word 2007.
You have to first open a new document in Word 2007, and select the option of a Blog Post. When opening for the first time, it asks you to add new blog account, where you enter the URL address of your blog and the username / password of your blog. Thereafter you will know for yourself, how to write a blog post with Word 2007.

Many a times friends ask me give the address of a working proxy server, so that they can access the blocked websites in their Offices or Computer Labs. A proxy server is a kind of buffer between your computer and the Internet resources you are accessing. Thus by connecting to a Proxy Server you can actually bypass the filtering mechanism.

Thousands of free Proxy servers are available on Google results. But why searching for a Proxy Server when Google can itself be used as a proxy.

This trick is slightly old but pretty cool nevertheless. Just use the following syntax:

http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.site.com

Replace the www.site.com with the site that you are trying to access. In this case, Google will access the pages like a web proxy and translate it back to the same language (english to english here). If you are accessing a site in a different language change the langpair to the appropriate tags.
Do remember that this technique is not guaranteed to work everywhere or with every kind of firewall or access-control system out there, nor will it hide your IP address. But do let me know how the Google proxy idea worked for you.

Broadband Tweak To Boost Up Internet Speed

This is for broad band connections. I didn’t try it on dial up but might work for dial up.
1.make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
2. start - run - type gpedit.msc
3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
5. expand the "network branch"
6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0
reboot if you want to but not necessary on some systems your all done. Effect is immediate on some systems. some need re-boot. I have one machine that needs to reboot first, the others didn't. Don't know why this is.

This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self. Even with QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth.

How to change Blogger Address Bar B Icon

Most bloggers (Blogspot users) are eager to uniquely customize the appearance of their blog, one of the small but significant improvements is changing tab icon / favicon, but most of them haven't known yet how to do it. This article will explain about how I changed my blogger tab icon, from default Blogger icon to my own icon. I have proven this myself so I'm sure they will work for you too. Would you like to know more?

Recently, I had changed my tab icon of my blogger site. It used to be a common blogger icon which is an orange rectangle with the white letter B inside it. I changed it into my custom made icon of white rectangle with this blurry I and Y letter inside it, which refered to my name (Update Jan 11, 2009: I change it again to a sky blue rectangle with vertical I and Y, which also looks like a winking smiley). I did it because I wanted my site to be more representing my personality, not Blogspot's. I will share you how I did it, just in case you want to try them, or just add them to your mountainous pile of knowledge :D Here are the steps:

1. I made a .PNG file with Microsoft Paint. It was 200 x 200 pixels in size. It did not have to be that size, I set it like that just to make it easier for me to draw everything I want, as it was big enough for my eyes. This .PNG file was the embryo or my icon. You can use another .PNG drawing tool if you want. It will be faster if you can directly make the .ICO file, as you can skip the next step and go directly to the third step. I would have done it if I had the tool, I swear :D

2. I uploaded the .PNG file created earlier to a website which provide free service on converting .PNG files into .ICO files such as www.convertico.com . This site convert my .PNG into an .ICO of 128 x 128 pixels. Then I saved the file using "save image as" tool in my Mozilla Firefox, to download it into my computer as a backup and also for the next step. If you use another browsers, apply with adaptation. You can also use another another similar website, just use search engines to look for them. I prefer Google, go get them Google! :D

3. I upload the icon file into www.imageboo.com . It was easy, since I did not need to register. anything. They provided me many links to my icon for free then. I just copied the direct link for the next step. You can use another image hosting service if you like, just remember to get the direct link. However you cannot use Photobucket for this, since they do not support .ICO files. The word "icon" does not collocate with the word "photo" anyway, let alone "bucket" :D

4. I added this bold tag on my template. To access it, I used the menu "edit html" in layout section. I put them in head section, between "title" tag and "b:skin" tag. If you face difficulties in finding the tag, just use finding tool in your browsers. For Mozilla Firefox, the shortcut is ctrl+f. If you use another browsers, apply with adaptation. If you use Safari, you can go to Afri.. nevermind :D

Put it between HEAD and TITLE tab..........

If you are still using Internet Explorer, think about using an alternate browser for web surfing such as Mozilla Firefox, opera, safari at least until Microsoft fixes the latest security vulnerabilities in its web browser. If you must continue with IE, Microsoft advises users to set ActiveX to prompt the user under Tools, Internet Options, Security tab. Hi everyone out there, I know that it was a long time since I wrote my last blog posting but as most of you know, time is always rare. Anyway, I’ll try to write more in the feature, especially because there is really stuff, I think it’s worth to write about. So today I’d like to talk about one big project, I was involved during about the last year at my workplace at Dreamlab Technologies, it’s the CSW certification.

You might ask yourself now: What the hell is CSW? CSW is short for Certified Secure Web, which is a security certification framework for the web. Actually we’ve got two certification types, the CSWT where T is short for Technology which means certification of web applications and we’ve got also a CSWD, which’s thought to stand for Developers. Before I go more into more details, I have to say that the CSW certification framework is thought to be open and not just for Dreamlab Technologies. We’re only a part of the CSW, the real certification is done by an independent party which is in our case a backend, built of educational organizations like for example universities, combined with partners like us. So this is not just poor advertising, we’re really looking for people/companies who’re interested in this all over the world.

Normally I would say, go to https://www.certifiedsecureweb.com/, where you can find all the information you need but unfortunately, the site is still only available in German, even if the English version is afaik ready.

So, what is CSW: “Certified Secure Web is an initiative to increase the overall security of web applications and also to provide a certification for Technology (Applications) and Developers.” (A free translation of the text on the CSW website, from German into English). It’s based on the OSSTMM by ISECOM, the Threat Classification of the WASC and on different resources, provided by the OWASP. With these different resources we think, that we can really provide a certification, which is worth the paper it’s printed on, even if we know that also the CSW certification can’t be perfect at all. Something which is also special on CSW is, that we don’t want to say that an application is secure and “hacker safe” (oops, sorry guys ) but we would like to certify a security baseline for web applications and help companies getting a more secure application.

I could go on with this for hours but I think it’s better to write my next two postings directly on CSWT and CSWD because it will say much more on what we’d like to achieve and in which way.

Secret Administrator Account for Vista

Deep inside the bowels of Windows Vista, there’s a secret Administrator account, and it’s different from the normal administrator account you most likely have set up on your PC. This Administrator account is not part of the Administrator group. (Confused yet? You should be.) It’s a kind of superadministrator, akin to the root account in Unix, and by default it’s turned off and hidden. (In describing this tut, i’ll always use the capital “A” for the secret Administrator account, and a lowercase “a” for a normal administrator account.)

In versions of Windows before Windows Vista, the Administrator account wasn’t hidden, and many people used it as their main or only account. This Administrator account had full rights over the computer.

In Windows Vista, Microsoft changed that. In Vista, the Administrator account is not subject to UAC, but normal administrator accounts are. So the Administrator can make any changes to the system and will see no UAC prompts.

Turning on the Administrator account is straightforward. First, open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the Search box on the Start menu, right-clicking the command prompt icon that appears at the top of the Start menu, then selecting Run as administrator

Then enter this command and press Enter:

From now on, the Administrator account will appear as an option on the Welcome screen, along with any user accounts you may have set up. Use it like any other account. Be aware that it won’t have a password yet, so it’s a good idea to set a password for it.

Send RSS Feeds to Blog Readers via SMS

RSS feeds have traditionally been delivered using a RSS reader / browser or using email. But now, you can also send your Blog’s RSS feeds to subscribed users via SMS. This tutorial is specific to Indian users, but you can tweak it to work for your country too.

This will make use of Google’s new SMS Channels features which is free in India.

To use this, you just need to have a working RSS feed on your blog, which is available by default if you are on Blogger or Wordpress. To have customized RSS Feeds, use FeedBurner.

Just login to Google using your Google account and go to: http://labs.google.co.in/smschannels/browse

You will need to register with your mobile number and verify it if you are a first time user.

Next, click on Create Your Own Channel.

Enter the Channel name, Description etc and in the source, select RSS / Atom Feed and enter your Blog’s RSS feed URL.

Tick the ‘Allow Publishing by - only ME’ and ‘Who can subscribe - Any user’ options. You can set the content to the Title or the Title with Body.

Click Create Channel and start inviting users to your Blog’s SMS channel.

Users can now get SMS updates for your blog by SMSing ON <channelname> to 9870807070.

Using Google’s SMS Channels, you can receive any RSS Feed on your mobile through SMS. Just create a new channel for a feed you want and subscribe to it.

Opera Turbo now available for testing

Opera has released a new version of Opera 10 a.k.a Opera Turbo. It has all the features included in Opera 10 alpha - the new Presto 2.2 rendering engine, a perfect 100/100 ACID3 score, spell check, auto update and other goodies, plus it now also has a new feature called “Opera Web Optimization Proxy“. It is much faster than the normal version of Opera (which BTW, is the fastest browser on Earth).

When you switch on the Turbo mode, all the websites you request are first compressed at Opera’s servers and then passed on to you, lowering your bandwidth consumption and loading pages much faster. It is similar to the OBML technique used in Opera Mini, but more powerful and fast. On my 2 MBPS connection, I didn’t feel much of a difference but it should surely help those with slower connections. To enable the Turbo mode, just click on the Turbo icon on the bottom left. Once activated, it will show you how much bandwidth has been saved already.

When turned on, Opera Turbo will display the average compression rate. Hover your mouse over the Opera Turbo icon to see a tooltip with the amount of bandwidth saved as long as it has been enabled.

Throttle your bandwidth to see the big difference

Opera Turbo will work with any type of connection, but to get the most out of it you should be on a situation with limited bandwidth. In case you can’t attend a crowded conference today or aren’t on a bus connected through your phone, you can simulate a slower connection speed with: NetLimiter 2 Pro on Windows and the pipe command on the Mac. We recommend limiting your bandwidth to 100Kbps.

Opera Turbo doesn’t change the Web site

Turbo uses a technology called “Opera Web Optimization Proxy”, which is different from the Opera Binary Markup Language used in Opera Mini. Web sites layout and text will look exactly the same, but image resolution may appear considerably lower as a result of the compression. Dynamic Web technologies such as Ajax (XmlHttpRequests) and Flash are supported, but some plugin content will load only after clicking on the empty element.

Your privacy is important

Even when Turbo is enabled, encrypted traffic does not go through our compression servers. This means that when you are on a SSL site, we bypass these traffic and let you communicate with the SSL site directly. Opera generates statistics of the usage of Opera Turbo, but these are aggregated numbers and no information can be linked to a single user. Opera does not store any users’ private information.

Opera Turbo will be part of future desktop versions

This is a time-limited release, but the feedback we receive from this test release will help us determine how and when to move forward with Opera Turbo.

Firefox Security Tool Kit - Now FF v3 compatible

I’ve been asked to make my Firefox Security Tool Kit (FSTK) compatible to the new Firefox version 3 and here it is
